Verse:001
Abdul Daryabadi : Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who has created everything--
Dr. Mohsin : Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists),
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Read with the name of your Lord who created (every thing),
Pickthal : Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth,
Yusuf Ali : Proclaim! (or Read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created―


Verse:002
Abdul Daryabadi : has created man from a clot!
Dr. Mohsin : He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood)
Mufti Taqi Usmani : He created man from a clot of blood.
Pickthal : Createth man from a clot.
Yusuf Ali : Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood:


Verse:003
Abdul Daryabadi : Recite thou, and thy Lord is the Most Bountiful,
Dr. Mohsin : Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Read, and your Lord is the most gracious,
Pickthal : Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous,
Yusuf Ali : Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful―


Verse:004
Abdul Daryabadi : Who has taught man by the pen --
Dr. Mohsin : Who has taught (the writing) by the pen.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Who imparted knowledge by means of the pen.
Pickthal : Who teacheth by the pen,
Yusuf Ali : He Who taught (the use of) the Pen―


Verse:005
Abdul Daryabadi : has taught man what he knew not.
Dr. Mohsin : He has taught man that which he knew not.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : He taught man what he did not know. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : Teacheth man that which he knew not.
Yusuf Ali : Taught man that which he knew not.


Verse:006
Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed: Verily man exorbitates,
Dr. Mohsin : Nay! Verily, man does transgress (in disbelief and evil deed).
Mufti Taqi Usmani : In fact, man crosses the limits,
Pickthal : Nay, but verily man is rebellious
Yusuf Ali : Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds,


Verse:007
Abdul Daryabadi : as he considers himself self-sufficient.
Dr. Mohsin : Because he considers himself self-sufficient.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Because he deems himself to be free of need. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : That he thinketh himself independent!
Yusuf Ali : In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient.


Verse:008
Abdul Daryabadi : Truly to thy Lord is the return.
Dr. Mohsin : Surely! unto your Lord is the return.
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Surely to your Lord is the return.
Pickthal : Lo! unto thy Lord is the return.
Yusuf Ali : Verily to thy Lord is the return (of all).


Verse:009
Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered him who forbids,
Dr. Mohsin : Have you (O Muhammad (SAW)) seen him (i.e. Abû Jahl) who prevents,
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Have you seen him who forbids
Pickthal : Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth
Yusuf Ali : Seest thou one who forbids.―


Verse:010
Abdul Daryabadi : a bondman of Ours when he prays
Dr. Mohsin : A slave (Muhammad (SAW)) when he prays?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : A servant of Allah when he prays?
Pickthal : A slave when he prayeth?
Yusuf Ali : A votary when he (turns) to pray?


Verse:011
Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered, if he is himself guided,
Dr. Mohsin : Tell me, if he (Muhammad (SAW)) is on the guidance (of Allâh)
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Tell me, if he is on the right path,
Pickthal : Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah)
Yusuf Ali : Seest thou if He is on (the road of) Guidance?―


Verse:012
Abdul Daryabadi : or, he commands piety?
Dr. Mohsin : Or enjoins piety!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Or bids piety, (would the former still forbid him?)
Pickthal : Or enjoineth piety?
Yusuf Ali : Or enjoins Righteousness?


Verse:013
Abdul Daryabadi : Hast thou considered, if he denies and turns away?
Dr. Mohsin : Tell me if he (Abû Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Qur'ân), and turns away?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Tell me, if he rejects (the true faith) and turns away,
Pickthal : Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward?
Yusuf Ali : Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away?


Verse:014
Abdul Daryabadi : Does he not know that Allah sees?
Dr. Mohsin : Knows he not that Allâh does see (what he does)?
Mufti Taqi Usmani : Does he not know that Allah is watching (him)?
Pickthal : Is he then unaware that Allah seeth?
Yusuf Ali : Knoweth he not that Allah doth see?


Verse:015
Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed: If he desists not, We shall seize and deal him by the forelock --
Dr. Mohsin : Nay! If he (Abû Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock —
Mufti Taqi Usmani : No! If he does not desist, We will certainly drag (him) by forelock,
Pickthal : Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock -
Yusuf Ali : Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock―


Verse:016
Abdul Daryabadi : a forelock, laying, sinning.
Dr. Mohsin : A lying, sinful forelock!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : A lying, sinful forelock.
Pickthal : The lying, sinful forelock -
Yusuf Ali : A lying sinful forelock!


Verse:017
Abdul Daryabadi : Well, then, let him call his assembly.
Dr. Mohsin : Then, let him call upon his council (of helpers),
Mufti Taqi Usmani : So let him call the men of his council,
Pickthal : Then let him call upon his henchmen!
Yusuf Ali : Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades):


Verse:018
Abdul Daryabadi : We also shall call the infernal guards.
Dr. Mohsin : We will call the guards of Hell (to deal with him)!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : We will call the soldiers of the Hell. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : We will call the guards of hell.
Yusuf Ali : We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)!


Verse:019
Abdul Daryabadi : No indeed! Do not obey thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw near.
Dr. Mohsin : Nay! (O Muhammad (SAW))! Do not obey him (Abû Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allâh!
Mufti Taqi Usmani : No! Never obey him, and bow down in sajdah, and come close to Me. [QETafseerComment]
Pickthal : Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah).
Yusuf Ali : Nay, heed him not: but prostrate in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)!
