Verse:001Abdul Daryabadi : There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall.
Dr. Mohsin : A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall
Pickthal : A questioner questioned concerning the doom about to fall
Yusuf Ali : A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall―
Verse:002Abdul Daryabadi : The infidels, of which there is no averter.
Dr. Mohsin : Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert,
Pickthal : Upon the disbelievers, which none can repel,
Yusuf Ali : The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off―
Verse:003Abdul Daryabadi : From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps.
Dr. Mohsin : From Allâh, the Lord of the ways of ascent.
Pickthal : From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways
Yusuf Ali : (A Penalty) from Allah, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.
Verse:004Abdul Daryabadi : Whereby the angels ascend Unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years.
Dr. Mohsin : The angels and the Rûh [Jibril (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years.
Pickthal : (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years.
Yusuf Ali : The angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years:
Verse:005Abdul Daryabadi : Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience.
Dr. Mohsin : So be patient (O Muhammad SAW ), with a good patience.
Pickthal : But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see.
Yusuf Ali : Therefore do thou hold Patience― a Patience of beautiful (contentment).
Verse:006Abdul Daryabadi : Verily they behold it afar off.
Dr. Mohsin : Verily! they see it (the torment) afar off.
Pickthal : Lo! they behold it afar off
Yusuf Ali : They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):
Verse:007Abdul Daryabadi : And We behold it nigh.
Dr. Mohsin : But We see it (quite) near.
Pickthal : While we behold it nigh:
Yusuf Ali : But We see it (quite) near.
Verse:008Abdul Daryabadi : It shall befall on a Day whereon the heaven shall become like Unto dregs of oil.
Dr. Mohsin : The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead).
Pickthal : The day when the sky will become as molten copper,
Yusuf Ali : The Day that the sky will be like molten brass,
Verse:009Abdul Daryabadi : And then the mountains shall become like Unto wool dyed.
Dr. Mohsin : And the mountains will be like flakes of wool.
Pickthal : And the hills become as flakes of wool,
Yusuf Ali : And the mountains will be like wool,
Verse:010Abdul Daryabadi : And not a friend shall ask a friend,
Dr. Mohsin : And no friend will ask a friend (about his condition),
Pickthal : And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend
Yusuf Ali : And no friend will ask after a friend,
Verse:011Abdul Daryabadi : Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children.
Dr. Mohsin : Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help]. The Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children.
Pickthal : Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children
Yusuf Ali : Though they will be put in sight of each other― the sinner's desire will be: would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children,
Verse:012Abdul Daryabadi : And his spouse and his brother.
Dr. Mohsin : And his wife and his brother,
Pickthal : And his spouse and his brother
Yusuf Ali : His wife and his brother,
Verse:013Abdul Daryabadi : And his kin that sheltered him.
Dr. Mohsin : And his kindred who sheltered him,
Pickthal : And his kin that harboured him
Yusuf Ali : His kindred who sheltered him.
Verse:014Abdul Daryabadi : And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him.
Dr. Mohsin : And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him[].
Pickthal : And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him.
Yusuf Ali : And all, all that is on earth so it could deliver him:
Verse:015Abdul Daryabadi : By no means! Verily it is a Flame.
Dr. Mohsin : By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell!
Pickthal : But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell
Yusuf Ali : By no means! For it would be the Fire of Hell!―
Verse:016Abdul Daryabadi : Flaying off the scalp-skin.
Dr. Mohsin : Taking away (burning completely) the head skin!
Pickthal : Eager to roast;
Yusuf Ali : Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!―
Verse:017Abdul Daryabadi : It shall calll him who turneth back and backslideth.
Dr. Mohsin : Calling (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from Faith) [picking and swallowing them up from that great gathering of mankind on the Day of Resurrection just as a bird picks up a food-grain from the earth with its beak and swallows it up]. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî)
Pickthal : It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth),
Yusuf Ali : Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right),
Verse:018Abdul Daryabadi : And masseth and then hoardeth.
Dr. Mohsin : And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allâh).
Pickthal : And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it.
Yusuf Ali : And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)!
Verse:019Abdul Daryabadi : Verily man is formed impatient.
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient;
Pickthal : Lo! man was created anxious,
Yusuf Ali : Truly man was created, very impatient―
Verse:020Abdul Daryabadi : When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing.
Dr. Mohsin : Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him;
Pickthal : Fretful when evil befalleth him
Yusuf Ali : Fretful when evil touches him;
Verse:021Abdul Daryabadi : And when good toucheth him he is begrudging.
Dr. Mohsin : And niggardly when good touches him;-
Pickthal : And, when good befalleth him, grudging;
Yusuf Ali : And niggardly when good reaches him―
Verse:022Abdul Daryabadi : Not so are the prayerful.
Dr. Mohsin : Except those who are devoted to Salât (prayers)[].
Pickthal : Save worshippers.
Yusuf Ali : Not so those devoted to Prayer―
Verse:023Abdul Daryabadi : Who are at their prayer constant.
Dr. Mohsin : Those who remain constant in their Salât (prayers);
Pickthal : Who are constant at their worship
Yusuf Ali : Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;
Verse:024Abdul Daryabadi : And those in whose riches is a known right.
Dr. Mohsin : And those in whose wealth there is a recognised right,
Pickthal : And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged
Yusuf Ali : And those in whose wealth is a recognised right
Verse:025Abdul Daryabadi : For the beggar and the destitute.
Dr. Mohsin : For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened);
Pickthal : For the beggar and the destitute;
Yusuf Ali : For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);
Verse:026Abdul Daryabadi : And those who testify to the Day of Requital.
Dr. Mohsin : And those who believe in the Day of Recompense,
Pickthal : And those who believe in the Day of Judgment,
Yusuf Ali : And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;
Verse:027Abdul Daryabadi : And those who are fearful of their Lords torment -
Dr. Mohsin : And those who fear the torment of their Lord,
Pickthal : And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom -
Yusuf Ali : And those who fear the punishment of their Lord―
Verse:028Abdul Daryabadi : Verily the torment of their Lord is not a thing to feel secure from.
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, the torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure —
Pickthal : Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure -
Yusuf Ali : For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity―
Verse:029Abdul Daryabadi : And those who of their private parts are guards.
Dr. Mohsin : And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts)[].
Pickthal : And those who preserve their chastity
Yusuf Ali : And those who guard their chastity
Verse:030Abdul Daryabadi : Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy -
Dr. Mohsin : Except with their wives and the (women slaves) whom their right hands possess — for (then) they are not blameworthy,
Pickthal : Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;
Yusuf Ali : Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess― for (then) they are not to be blamed,
Verse:031Abdul Daryabadi : And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers
Dr. Mohsin : But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers.[]
Pickthal : But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors;
Yusuf Ali : But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors―
Verse:032Abdul Daryabadi : And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers.
Dr. Mohsin : And those who keep their trusts and covenants;
Pickthal : And those who keep their pledges and their covenant,
Yusuf Ali : And those who respect their trusts and covenants;
Verse:033Abdul Daryabadi : And those who stand firm in their testimonies.
Dr. Mohsin : And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
Pickthal : And those who stand by their testimony
Yusuf Ali : And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
Verse:034Abdul Daryabadi : And those who of their prayer are observant.
Dr. Mohsin : And those who guard their Salât (prayers) well[] ,
Pickthal : And those who are attentive at their worship.
Yusuf Ali : And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship―
Verse:035Abdul Daryabadi : Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured.
Dr. Mohsin : Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured.
Pickthal : These will dwell in Gardens, honoured.
Yusuf Ali : Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens of (Bliss).
Verse:036Abdul Daryabadi : What aileth those who disbelieve, toward thee hastening.
Dr. Mohsin : So what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten to listen from you (O Muhammad SAW), in order to belie you and to mock at you, and at Allâh's Book (this Qur'ân).
Pickthal : What aileth those who disbelieve, that they keep staring toward thee (O Muhammad), open-eyed,
Yusuf Ali : Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee―
Verse:037Abdul Daryabadi : On the right and on the left, in companies?
Dr. Mohsin : (Sitting) in groups on the right and on the left (of you, O Muhammad SAW)?
Pickthal : On the right and on the left, in groups?
Yusuf Ali : From the right and from the left, in crowds?
Verse:038Abdul Daryabadi : Coveteth every man of them, that he shall enter the Garden of Delight?
Dr. Mohsin : Does every man of them hope to enter the Paradise of Delight?
Pickthal : Doth every man among them hope to enter the Garden of Delight?
Yusuf Ali : Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?
Verse:039Abdul Daryabadi : By no means! veriiy We! We have created them from that which they know.
Dr. Mohsin : No, that is not like that! Verily, We have created them out of that which they know!
Pickthal : Nay, verily. Lo! We created them from what they know.
Yusuf Ali : By no means! for We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!
Verse:040Abdul Daryabadi : I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests, that, vierly We are Able.
Dr. Mohsin : So I swear by the Lord of all [the three hundred and sixty-five (365)] points of sunrise and sunset in the east and the west that surely We are Able —
Pickthal : But nay! I swear by the Lord of the rising-places and the setting-places of the planets that We are Able
Yusuf Ali : Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly―
Verse:041Abdul Daryabadi : To replace them by others better than they; and We are not to be outrun.
Dr. Mohsin : To replace them by (others) better than them; and We are not to be outrun.
Pickthal : To replace them by (others) better than them. And we are not to be outrun.
Yusuf Ali : Substitute for them better (men) than they; and We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).
Verse:042Abdul Daryabadi : Wherefore let thou them alone plunging in vanity and sporting until they meet their Day which they are promised.
Dr. Mohsin : So leave them to plunge in vain talk[] and play about, until they meet their Day which they are promised —
Pickthal : So let them chat and play until they meet their Day which they are promised,
Yusuf Ali : So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!
Verse:043Abdul Daryabadi : The Day whereon they shall come forth from the sepulchres hastily, as though they were to an altar hurrying.
Dr. Mohsin : The Day when they will come out of the graves quickly as racing to a goal,
Pickthal : The day when they come forth from the graves in haste, as racing to a goal,
Yusuf Ali : The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchers in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them)―
Verse:044Abdul Daryabadi : Downcast shall be their looks; abjectness shall overspread them. Such is the Day which they are promised.
Dr. Mohsin : With their eyes lowered in fear and humility, ignominy covering them (all over)! That is the Day which they were promised!
Pickthal : With eyes aghast, abasement stupefying them: Such is the Day which they are promised.
Yusuf Ali : Their eyes lowered in dejection ignominy covering them (all over)! Such is the Day the which they are promised!
