Al-Waqia (THE EVENT, THE INEVITABLE)

Verse:001
Dr. Mohsin : When the Event (i.e. the Day of Resurrection) befalls.
Pickthal : When the event befalleth -
Yusuf Ali : When the Event inevitable cometh to pass.


Verse:002
Dr. Mohsin : And there can be no denyial of its befalling.
Pickthal : There is no denying that it will befall -
Yusuf Ali : Then will no (soul) entertain falsehood concerning its coming.


Verse:003
Dr. Mohsin : Bringing low (some — those who will enter Hell) Exalting (others- those who will enter Paradise). (Tafsir Ibn-Kathir)
Pickthal : Abasing (some), exalting (others);
Yusuf Ali : (Many) will it bring low, (many) will it exalt;


Verse:004
Dr. Mohsin : When the earth will be shaken with a terrible shake.
Pickthal : When the earth is shaken with a shock
Yusuf Ali : When the earth shall be shaken to its depths,


Verse:005
Dr. Mohsin : And the mountains will be powdered to dust.
Pickthal : And the hills are ground to powder
Yusuf Ali : And the mountains shall be crumbled to atoms,


Verse:006
Dr. Mohsin : So that they will become floating dust particles.
Pickthal : So that they become a scattered dust,
Yusuf Ali : Becoming dust scattered abroad,


Verse:007
Dr. Mohsin : And you (all) will be in three groups.
Pickthal : And ye will be three kinds:
Yusuf Ali : And ye shall be sorted out into three classes.


Verse:008
Dr. Mohsin : So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands) — how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand! (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise).
Pickthal : (First) those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Yusuf Ali : Then (there will be) the Companions of the Right Hand― what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?


Verse:009
Dr. Mohsin : And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands) — how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell).
Pickthal : And (then) those on the left hand; what of those on the left hand?
Yusuf Ali : And the Companions of the Left hand― what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?


Verse:010
Dr. Mohsin : And those foremost [(in Islâmic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islâm,] will be foremost (in Paradise).
Pickthal : And the foremost in the race, the foremost in the race:
Yusuf Ali : And those Foremost (in Faith) will be Foremost (in the Hereafter).


Verse:011
Dr. Mohsin : These will be those nearest (to Allâh).
Pickthal : Those are they who will be brought nigh
Yusuf Ali : These will be those Nearest to Allah:


Verse:012
Dr. Mohsin : In the Gardens of Delight (Paradise).
Pickthal : In gardens of delight;
Yusuf Ali : In Gardens of Bliss:


Verse:013
Dr. Mohsin : A multitude of those (foremost) will be from the first generations (who embraced Islâm).
Pickthal : A multitude of those of old
Yusuf Ali : A number of people from those of old


Verse:014
Dr. Mohsin : And a few of those (foremost) will be from the later generations.
Pickthal : And a few of those of later time.
Yusuf Ali : And a few from those of later times.


Verse:015
Dr. Mohsin : (They will be) on thrones woven with gold and precious stones,
Pickthal : On lined couches,
Yusuf Ali : (They will be) on Thrones encrusted (with gold and precious stones).


Verse:016
Dr. Mohsin : Reclining thereon, face to face.
Pickthal : Reclining therein face to face.
Yusuf Ali : Reclining on them facing each other.


Verse:017
Dr. Mohsin : Immortal boys will go around them (serving).
Pickthal : There wait on them immortal youths
Yusuf Ali : Round about them will (serve) youths of perpetual (freshness).


Verse:018
Dr. Mohsin : With cups, and jugs, and a glass of the flowing wine,
Pickthal : With bowls and ewers and a cup from a pure spring
Yusuf Ali : With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains:


Verse:019
Dr. Mohsin : Wherefrom they will get neither any aching of the head, nor any intoxication.
Pickthal : Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness,
Yusuf Ali : No after-ache will they receive therefrom, nor will they suffer intoxication:


Verse:020
Dr. Mohsin : And with fruit, that they may choose.
Pickthal : And fruit that they prefer
Yusuf Ali : And with fruits, any that they may select;


Verse:021
Dr. Mohsin : And with the flesh of fowls that they desire.
Pickthal : And flesh of fowls that they desire.
Yusuf Ali : And the flesh of fowls, any that they may desire.


Verse:022
Dr. Mohsin : And (there will be) Hur (fair females) with wide, lovely eyes (as wives for the pious),
Pickthal : And (there are) fair ones with wide, lovely eyes,
Yusuf Ali : And (there will be) Companions with beautiful, big, and lustrous eyes--


Verse:023
Dr. Mohsin : Like unto preserved pearls.
Pickthal : Like unto hidden pearls,
Yusuf Ali : Like unto Pearls well-guarded.


Verse:024
Dr. Mohsin : A reward for what they used to do.
Pickthal : Reward for what they used to do.
Yusuf Ali : A Reward for the Deeds of their past (Life).


Verse:025
Dr. Mohsin : No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech (like backbiting).
Pickthal : There hear they no vain speaking nor recrimination
Yusuf Ali : No frivolity will they hear therein, nor any taint of ill―


Verse:026
Dr. Mohsin : But only the saying of: Salâm!, Salâm! (greetings with peace)[] !
Pickthal : (Naught) but the saying: Peace, (and again) Peace.
Yusuf Ali : Only the saying "Peace! Peace."


Verse:027
Dr. Mohsin : And those on the Right Hand- how (fortunate) will be those on the Right Hand?
Pickthal : And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand?
Yusuf Ali : The Companions of the Right Hand, what will be the Companions of the Right Hand?


Verse:028
Dr. Mohsin : (They will be) among thornless lote-trees,
Pickthal : Among thornless lote-trees
Yusuf Ali : (They will be) among lote trees without thorns,


Verse:029
Dr. Mohsin : And Among Talh (banana-trees) with fruits piled one above another,
Pickthal : And clustered plantains,
Yusuf Ali : Among Talh trees with flowers (or fruits) piled one above another―


Verse:030
Dr. Mohsin : In shade long-extended,
Pickthal : And spreading shade,
Yusuf Ali : In shade long-extended,


Verse:031
Dr. Mohsin : And by water flowing constantly,
Pickthal : And water gushing,
Yusuf Ali : By water flowing constantly


Verse:032
Dr. Mohsin : And fruit in plenty,
Pickthal : And fruit in plenty
Yusuf Ali : And fruit in abundance


Verse:033
Dr. Mohsin : Whose supply is not cut off (by change of season) nor are they out of reach.
Pickthal : Neither out of reach nor yet forbidden,
Yusuf Ali : Whose season is not limited, nor (supply) forbidden,


Verse:034
Dr. Mohsin : And on couches or thrones, raised high.
Pickthal : And raised couches;
Yusuf Ali : And on Thrones (of Dignity) raised high.


Verse:035
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, We have created them (maidens) of special creation.
Pickthal : Lo! We have created them a (new) creation
Yusuf Ali : We have created (their Companions) of special creation.


Verse:036
Dr. Mohsin : And made them virgins.
Pickthal : And made them virgins,
Yusuf Ali : And made them virgin-pure (and undefiled)―


Verse:037
Dr. Mohsin : Loving (their husbands only), (and) of equal age.
Pickthal : Lovers, friends,
Yusuf Ali : Beloved (by nature), equal in age―


Verse:038
Dr. Mohsin : For those on the Right Hand.
Pickthal : For those on the right hand;
Yusuf Ali : For the companions of the Right Hand.


Verse:039
Dr. Mohsin : A multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the first generation (who embraced Islâm).
Pickthal : A multitude of those of old
Yusuf Ali : A (goodly) number from those of old―


Verse:040
Dr. Mohsin : And a multitude of those (on the Right Hand) will be from the later generations.
Pickthal : And a multitude of those of later time.
Yusuf Ali : And a (goodly) number from those of later times.


Verse:041
Dr. Mohsin : And those on the Left Hand how (unfortunate) will be those on the Left Hand?
Pickthal : And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand?
Yusuf Ali : The Companions of the Left Hand-what will be the Companions of the Left Hand?


Verse:042
Dr. Mohsin : In fierce hot wind and boiling water.
Pickthal : In scorching wind and scalding water
Yusuf Ali : (They will be) in the midst of a fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water


Verse:043
Dr. Mohsin : And shadow of black smoke.
Pickthal : And shadow of black smoke,
Yusuf Ali : And in the shades of Black Smoke:


Verse:044
Dr. Mohsin : (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) pleasant,
Pickthal : Neither cool nor refreshing.
Yusuf Ali : Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please:


Verse:045
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, before that, they indulged in luxury,
Pickthal : Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury
Yusuf Ali : For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury).


Verse:046
Dr. Mohsin : And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allâh, committing murder and other crimes).[]
Pickthal : And used to persist in the awful sin.
Yusuf Ali : And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme!


Verse:047
Dr. Mohsin : And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected?
Pickthal : And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again,
Yusuf Ali : And they used to say "what! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?―


Verse:048
Dr. Mohsin : "And also our forefathers?"
Pickthal : And also our forefathers?
Yusuf Ali : "(We) and our fathers of old?"


Verse:049
Dr. Mohsin : Say (O Muhammad SAW): "(Yes) verily, those of old, and those of later times.
Pickthal : Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time
Yusuf Ali : Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times,


Verse:050
Dr. Mohsin : "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day.
Pickthal : Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day.
Yusuf Ali : "All will certainly be gathered together for the meeting appointed for a Day Well-known.


Verse:051
Dr. Mohsin : "Then moreover, verily, you the erring-ones, the deniers (of Resurrection)!
Pickthal : Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers,
Yusuf Ali : "Then will ye truly, O ye that go wrong and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!―


Verse:052
Dr. Mohsin : "You verily will eat of the trees of Zaqqûm.
Pickthal : Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum
Yusuf Ali : "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum.


Verse:053
Dr. Mohsin : "Then you will fill your bellies therewith,
Pickthal : And will fill your bellies therewith;
Yusuf Ali : "Then will ye fill your insides therewith,


Verse:054
Dr. Mohsin : "And drink boiling water on top of it.
Pickthal : And thereon ye will drink of boiling water,
Yusuf Ali : "And drink Boiling Water on top of it:


Verse:055
Dr. Mohsin : "And you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!"
Pickthal : Drinking even as the camel drinketh.
Yusuf Ali : "Indeed ye shall drink like diseased camels raging with thirst!


Verse:056
Dr. Mohsin : That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense!
Pickthal : This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
Yusuf Ali : Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital!


Verse:057
Dr. Mohsin : We created you, then why do you believe not?
Pickthal : We created you. Will ye then admit the truth?
Yusuf Ali : It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth?


Verse:058
Dr. Mohsin : Then tell Me (about) the (human) semen that you emit.
Pickthal : Have ye seen that which ye emit?
Yusuf Ali : Do ye then see?― The (human seed) that ye throw out,―


Verse:059
Dr. Mohsin : Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator?
Pickthal : Do ye create it or are We the Creator?
Yusuf Ali : Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creator?


Verse:060
Dr. Mohsin : We have decreed death to you all, and We are not outstripped,
Pickthal : We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun,
Yusuf Ali : We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated


Verse:061
Dr. Mohsin : To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not.
Pickthal : That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not.
Yusuf Ali : From changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (Forms) that ye know not.


Verse:062
Dr. Mohsin : And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember (or take heed)?
Pickthal : And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect?
Yusuf Ali : And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises?


Verse:063
Dr. Mohsin : Then tell Me! about seed that you sow in the ground.
Pickthal : Have ye seen that which ye cultivate?
Yusuf Ali : See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground?


Verse:064
Dr. Mohsin : Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower?
Pickthal : Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer?
Yusuf Ali : Is it ye that cause it to grow or are We the Cause?


Verse:065
Dr. Mohsin : Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). (Tafsir Ibn-Kathir)
Pickthal : If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim:
Yusuf Ali : Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment


Verse:066
Dr. Mohsin : (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramûn (i.e. ruined or have lost the money without any profit, or are punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation)! (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî)
Pickthal : Lo! we are laden with debt!
Yusuf Ali : (Saying) "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing):


Verse:067
Dr. Mohsin : "Nay, but we are deprived!"
Pickthal : Nay, but we are deprived!
Yusuf Ali : "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)."


Verse:068
Dr. Mohsin : Then tell Me about the water that you drink.
Pickthal : Have ye observed the water which ye drink?
Yusuf Ali : See ye the water which ye drink?


Verse:069
Dr. Mohsin : Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down?
Pickthal : Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder?
Yusuf Ali : Do ye bring it Down (in rain) from the Cloud or do We?


Verse:070
Dr. Mohsin : If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allâh)?
Pickthal : If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks?
Yusuf Ali : Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks?


Verse:071
Dr. Mohsin : Then tell Me about the fire which you kindle.
Pickthal : Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out;
Yusuf Ali : See ye the Fire which ye kindle?


Verse:072
Dr. Mohsin : Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower?
Pickthal : Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower?
Yusuf Ali : Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it?


Verse:073
Dr. Mohsin : We have made it a Reminder (of the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world).
Pickthal : We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness.
Yusuf Ali : We have made it a reminder (of our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts.


Verse:074
Dr. Mohsin : Then glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Pickthal : Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Yusuf Ali : Then celebrate with praises the name of the Lord, the Supreme:


Verse:075
Dr. Mohsin : So I swear by the setting of the stars.
Pickthal : Nay, I swear by the places of the stars -
Yusuf Ali : Furthermore I call to witness the setting of the Stars―


Verse:076
Dr. Mohsin : And verily, that is indeed a great oath, if you but know.
Pickthal : And lo! that verily is a tremendous oath, if ye but knew -
Yusuf Ali : And that is indeed a mighty adjuration if ye but knew―


Verse:077
Dr. Mohsin : That (this) is indeed an honourable recitation (the Noble Qur'ân).
Pickthal : That (this) is indeed a noble Qur'an
Yusuf Ali : That this is indeed a Qur'an most honourable,


Verse:078
Dr. Mohsin : In a Book well-guarded (with Allâh in the heaven i.e. Al-Lauh Al-Mahfûz).
Pickthal : In a Book kept hidden
Yusuf Ali : In a Book well-guarded,


Verse:079
Dr. Mohsin : Which (that Book with Allâh) none can touch but the purified (i.e. the angels).
Pickthal : Which none toucheth save the purified,
Yusuf Ali : Which none shall touch but those who are clean:


Verse:080
Dr. Mohsin : A Revelation (this Qur'ân) from the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
Pickthal : A revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.
Yusuf Ali : A Revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.


Verse:081
Dr. Mohsin : Is it such a talk (this Qur'an) that you (disbelievers) deny?
Pickthal : Is it this Statement that ye scorn,
Yusuf Ali : Is it such a Message that ye would hold in light esteem?


Verse:082
Dr. Mohsin : And instead (of thanking Allâh) for the provision He gives you, you deny (Him by disbelief)!
Pickthal : And make denial thereof your livelihood?
Yusuf Ali : And have ye made it your livelihood that ye should declare it false?


Verse:083
Dr. Mohsin : Then why do you not (intervene) when (the soul of a dying person) reaches the throat?
Pickthal : Why, then, when (the soul) cometh up to the throat (of the dying)
Yusuf Ali : Then why do ye not (intervene) when (the soul of the dying man) reaches the throat


Verse:084
Dr. Mohsin : And you at the moment are looking on,
Pickthal : And ye are at that moment looking
Yusuf Ali : And ye the while (sit) looking on―


Verse:085
Dr. Mohsin : But We (i.e. Our angels who take the soul) are nearer to him than you, but you see not, (Tafsir At-Tabarî)
Pickthal : - And We are nearer unto him than ye are, but ye see not -
Yusuf Ali : But We are nearer to him than ye, and yet see not


Verse:086
Dr. Mohsin : Then why do you not, if you are exempt from the reckoning and recompense (punishment) —
Pickthal : Why then, if ye are not in bondage (unto Us),
Yusuf Ali : Then why do you not if you are exempt from (future) account―


Verse:087
Dr. Mohsin : Bring back the soul (to its body), if you are truthful?
Pickthal : Do ye not force it back, if ye are truthful?
Yusuf Ali : Call back the soul, if ye are true (in your claim of Independence)?


Verse:088
Dr. Mohsin : Then, if he (the dying person) be of the Muqarrabûn (those brought near to Allâh),
Pickthal : Thus if he is of those brought nigh,
Yusuf Ali : Thus then, if he be of those Nearest to Allah,


Verse:089
Dr. Mohsin : (There is for him) rest and provision, and a Garden of Delights (Paradise).
Pickthal : Then breath of life, and plenty, and a Garden of delight.
Yusuf Ali : (There is for him) Rest and Satisfaction, and a Garden of Delights.


Verse:090
Dr. Mohsin : And if he (the dying person) be of those on the Right Hand,
Pickthal : And if he is of those on the right hand,
Yusuf Ali : And if he be of the Companions of the Right Hand


Verse:091
Dr. Mohsin : Then there is safety and peace (from the Punishment of Allâh) for those on the Right Hand.
Pickthal : Then (the greeting) "Peace be unto thee" from those on the right hand.
Yusuf Ali : (For him is the salutation) "Peace be unto thee", from the Companions of the Right Hand.


Verse:092
Dr. Mohsin : But if he (the dying person) be of the denying (of the Resurrection), the erring (away from the Right Path of Islâmic Monotheism),
Pickthal : But if he is of the rejecters, the erring,
Yusuf Ali : And if he be of those who treat (truth) as Falsehood, who go wrong


Verse:093
Dr. Mohsin : Then for him is entertainment with boiling water.
Pickthal : Then the welcome will be boiling water
Yusuf Ali : For him is Entertainment with Boiling Water,


Verse:094
Dr. Mohsin : And burning in Hell-fire.
Pickthal : And roasting at hell-fire.
Yusuf Ali : And burning in Hell-Fire.


Verse:095
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, this! This is an absolute Truth with certainty.
Pickthal : Lo! this is certain truth.
Yusuf Ali : Verily, this is the Very Truth and Certainty.


Verse:096
Dr. Mohsin : So glorify with praises the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
Pickthal : Therefor (O Muhammad) praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous.
Yusuf Ali : So celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme.
