Verse:001
Dr. Mohsin : By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes).
Pickthal : By the Star when it setteth,
Yusuf Ali : By the Star when it goes down―


Verse:002
Dr. Mohsin : Your companion (Muhammad SAW) has neither gone astray nor has erred.
Pickthal : Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived;
Yusuf Ali : Your Companion is neither astray nor being misled,


Verse:003
Dr. Mohsin : Nor does he speak of (his own) desire.
Pickthal : Nor doth he speak of (his own) desire.
Yusuf Ali : Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire.


Verse:004
Dr. Mohsin : It is only a Revelation revealed.
Pickthal : It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired,
Yusuf Ali : It is no less than inspiration sent down to him:


Verse:005
Dr. Mohsin : He has been taught (this Qur'ân) by one mighty in power [Jibril (Gabriel)]
Pickthal : Which one of mighty powers hath taught him,
Yusuf Ali : He was taught by one mighty in Power,


Verse:006
Dr. Mohsin : One free from any defect in body and mind, then he (Jibril — Gabriel in the real shap as created by Allah) rose and became stable.
Pickthal : One vigorous; and he grew clear to view
Yusuf Ali : Endued with Wisdom: For he appeared (in stately form)


Verse:007
Dr. Mohsin : While he [Jibril (Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon,
Pickthal : When he was on the uppermost horizon.
Yusuf Ali : While he was in the highest part of the horizon:


Verse:008
Dr. Mohsin : Then he [Jibril (Gabriel)] approached and came closer,
Pickthal : Then he drew nigh and came down
Yusuf Ali : Then he approached and came closer,


Verse:009
Dr. Mohsin : And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer,
Pickthal : Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer,
Yusuf Ali : And was at a distance of but two bow-lengths or (even) nearer;


Verse:010
Dr. Mohsin : So (Allâh) revealed to His slave [Muhammad SAW through Jibrail (Gabriel) A.S.] whatever He revealed.
Pickthal : And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed.
Yusuf Ali : So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey.


Verse:011
Dr. Mohsin : The (Prophet's) heart lied not in what he (Muhammad SAW) saw.
Pickthal : The heart lied not (in seeing) what it saw.
Yusuf Ali : The (Prophet's) (mind and) heart in no way falsified that which he saw.


Verse:012
Dr. Mohsin : Will you then dispute with him (Muhammad SAW) about what he saw [during the Mi'râj: (Ascent of the Prophet SAW to the seven heavens)][]
Pickthal : Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he seeth?
Yusuf Ali : Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw?


Verse:013
Dr. Mohsin : And indeed he (Muhammad SAW) saw him [Jibril (Gabriel)] at a second descent (i.e. another time).
Pickthal : And verily he saw him yet another time
Yusuf Ali : For indeed he saw him at a second descent.


Verse:014
Dr. Mohsin : Near Sidrat-ul-Muntaha (a lote-tree of the utmost boundary over the seventh heaven beyond which none can pass).
Pickthal : By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary,
Yusuf Ali : Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass:


Verse:015
Dr. Mohsin : Near it is the Paradise of Abode.
Pickthal : Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode.
Yusuf Ali : Near it is the Garden of Abode.


Verse:016
Dr. Mohsin : When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it!
Pickthal : When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree,
Yusuf Ali : Behold, the Lote-tree was shrouded (in mystery unspeakable!)


Verse:017
Dr. Mohsin : The sight (of Prophet Muhammad SAW) turned not aside (right or left), nor it transgressed beyond the limit (ordained for it).
Pickthal : The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold.
Yusuf Ali : (His) sight never swerved nor did it go wrong!


Verse:018
Dr. Mohsin : Indeed he (Muhammad SAW) did see, of the Greatest Signs, of his Lord (Allâh).
Pickthal : Verily he saw one of the greater revelations of his Lord.
Yusuf Ali : For truly did he see of the Signs of his Lord the Greatest!


Verse:019
Dr. Mohsin : Have you then considered Al-Lât, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs) .[]
Pickthal : Have ye thought upon Al-Lat and Al-'Uzza
Yusuf Ali : Have ye seen Lat an Uzza


Verse:020
Dr. Mohsin : And Manât (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third?
Pickthal : And Manat, the third, the other?
Yusuf Ali : And another the third (goddess) Manat?


Verse:021
Dr. Mohsin : Is it for you the males and for Him the females?
Pickthal : Are yours the males and His the females?
Yusuf Ali : What! for you the male sex and for Him the female?


Verse:022
Dr. Mohsin : That indeed is a division most unfair!
Pickthal : That indeed were an unfair division!
Yusuf Ali : Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair!


Verse:023
Dr. Mohsin : They are but names which you have named — you and your fathers — for which Allâh has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!
Pickthal : They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them.
Yusuf Ali : These are nothing but names which ye have devised― ye and your fathers― for which Allah has sent down no authority (whatever). They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own souls desire!― even though there has already come to them Guidance from their Lord!


Verse:024
Dr. Mohsin : Or shall man have what he wishes?
Pickthal : Or shall man have what he coveteth?
Yusuf Ali : Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after?


Verse:025
Dr. Mohsin : But to Allâh belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world).
Pickthal : But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former.
Yusuf Ali : But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong.


Verse:026
Dr. Mohsin : And there are many angels in the heavens, whose intercession will avail nothing except after Allâh has given leave for whom He wills and is pleased with.
Pickthal : And how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession availeth naught save after Allah giveth leave to whom He chooseth and accepteth.
Yusuf Ali : How many so ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable to Him.


Verse:027
Dr. Mohsin : Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.
Pickthal : Lo! it is those who disbelieve in the Hereafter who name the angels with the names of females.
Yusuf Ali : Those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names.


Verse:028
Dr. Mohsin : But they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and verily, guess is no substitute for the truth.
Pickthal : And they have no knowledge thereof. They follow but a guess, and lo! a guess can never take the place of the truth.
Yusuf Ali : But they have no knowledge therein. They follow nothing but conjecture; and conjecture avails nothing against Truth.


Verse:029
Dr. Mohsin : Therefore withdraw (O Muhammad SAW) from him who turns away from Our Reminder (this Qur'ân) and desires nothing but the life of this world.
Pickthal : Then withdraw (O Muhammad) from him who fleeth from Our remembrance and desireth but the life of the world.
Yusuf Ali : Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world.


Verse:030
Dr. Mohsin : That is what they could reach of knowledge. Verily, your Lord it is He Who knows best him who goes astray from His Path, and He knows best him who receives guidance.
Pickthal : Such is their sum of knowledge. Lo! thy Lord is best aware of him who strayeth, and He is best aware of him whom goeth right.
Yusuf Ali : That is as far as knowledge will reach them. Verily thy Lord knoweth best those who stray from His path, and He knoweth best those who receive guidance.


Verse:031
Dr. Mohsin : And to Allâh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, that He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done (i.e. punish them in Hell), and reward those who do good, with what is best (i.e. Paradise).
Pickthal : And unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, that He may reward those who do evil with that which they have done, and reward those who do good with goodness.
Yusuf Ali : Yea, to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and on earth; so that He rewards those who do evil, according to their deeds, and He rewards those who do good, with what is best.


Verse:032
Dr. Mohsin : Those who avoid great sins (see the Qur'ân, Verses: 6:152,153) and Al-Fawâhish (illegal sexual intercourse) except the small faults, verily, your Lord is of vast forgiveness. He knows you well when He created you from the earth (Adam), and when you were fetuses in your mothers' wombs. So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him [i.e. those who are Al-Muttaqûn (pious - see V.2:2)].
Pickthal : Those who avoid enormities of sin and abominations, save the unwilled offences - (for them) lo! thy Lord is of vast mercy. He is best aware of you (from the time) when He created you from the earth, and when ye were hidden in the bellies of your mothers. Therefor ascribe not purity unto yourselves. He is best aware of him who wardeth off (evil).
Yusuf Ali : Those who avoid great sins and shameful deeds, Only (falling into) small faults--verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness. He knows you well when He brings you out of the earth, and when ye are hidden in your mother's wombs Therefore justify not yourselves. He knows best who it is that guards against evil.


Verse:033
Dr. Mohsin : Did you (O Muhammad SAW) observe him who turned away (from Islâm).
Pickthal : Didst thou (O Muhammad) observe him who turned away,
Yusuf Ali : Seest thou one who turns back.


Verse:034
Dr. Mohsin : And gave a little, then stopped (giving)?
Pickthal : And gave a little, then was grudging?
Yusuf Ali : Gives a little, then hardens (his heart)?


Verse:035
Dr. Mohsin : Is with him the knowledge of the unseen so that he sees?
Pickthal : Hath he knowledge of the Unseen so that he seeth?
Yusuf Ali : What! Has he knowledge of the Unseen so that he can see?


Verse:036
Dr. Mohsin : Or is he not informed with what is in the Pages (Scripture) of Mûsa (Moses),
Pickthal : Or hath he not had news of what is in the books of Moses
Yusuf Ali : Nay, is he not acquainted with what is in the books of Moses―


Verse:037
Dr. Mohsin : And of Ibrâhim (Abraham) who fulfilled (or conveyed) all that (Allâh ordered him to do or convey),
Pickthal : And Abraham who paid his debt:
Yusuf Ali : And of Abraham who fulfilled his engagements―


Verse:038
Dr. Mohsin : That no burdened person (with sins) shall bear the burden (sins) of another.
Pickthal : That no laden one shall bear another's load,
Yusuf Ali : Namely, that no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another;


Verse:039
Dr. Mohsin : And that man can have nothing but what he does (good or bad)[] ,
Pickthal : And that man hath only that for which he maketh effort,
Yusuf Ali : That man can have nothing but what he strives for;


Verse:040
Dr. Mohsin : And that his deeds will be seen,
Pickthal : And that his effort will be seen.
Yusuf Ali : That (the fruit of) his striving will soon come in sight;


Verse:041
Dr. Mohsin : Then he will be recompensed with a full and the best recompense[]
Pickthal : And afterward he will be repaid for it with fullest payment;
Yusuf Ali : Then will he be rewarded with a reward complete;


Verse:042
Dr. Mohsin : And that to your Lord (Allâh) is the End (Return of everything).
Pickthal : And that thy Lord, He is the goal;
Yusuf Ali : That to thy Lord is the final Goal;


Verse:043
Dr. Mohsin : And that it is He (Allâh) Who makes (whom He wills) laugh, and makes (whom He wills) weep.
Pickthal : And that He it is who maketh laugh, and maketh weep,
Yusuf Ali : That it is He who Granteth Laughter and Tears;


Verse:044
Dr. Mohsin : And that it is He (Allâh) Who causes death and gives life.
Pickthal : And that He it is Who giveth death and giveth life;
Yusuf Ali : That it is He who Granteth Death and Life;


Verse:045
Dr. Mohsin : And that He (Allâh) creates the pairs, male and female.
Pickthal : And that He createth the two spouses, the male and the female,
Yusuf Ali : That He did create the pairs male and female.


Verse:046
Dr. Mohsin : From Nutfah (drops of semen — male and female discharges) when it is emitted.
Pickthal : From a drop (of seed) when it is poured forth;
Yusuf Ali : From a seed when lodged (in its place);


Verse:047
Dr. Mohsin : And that upon Him (Allâh) is another bringing forth (Resurrection).
Pickthal : And that He hath ordained the second bringing forth;
Yusuf Ali : That He hath promised a Second Creation (raising of the Dead)


Verse:048
Dr. Mohsin : And that it is He (Allâh) Who gives much or a little (of wealth and contentment)
Pickthal : And that He it is Who enricheth and contenteth;
Yusuf Ali : That it is He Who giveth wealth and satisfaction;


Verse:049
Dr. Mohsin : And that He (Allâh) is the Lord of Sirius (the star which the pagan Arabs used to worship);
Pickthal : And that He it is Who is the Lord of Sirius;
Yusuf Ali : That He is the Lord of Sirius (the Mighty Star);


Verse:050
Dr. Mohsin : And that it is He (Allâh) Who destroyed the former 'Ad (people),
Pickthal : And that He destroyed the former (tribe of) A'ad,
Yusuf Ali : And that it is He Who destroyed the (powerful) ancient `Ad (people)


Verse:051
Dr. Mohsin : And Thamûd (people). He spared none of them.
Pickthal : And (the tribe of) Thamud He spared not;
Yusuf Ali : And the Thamud, nor gave them a lease of perpetual life.


Verse:052
Dr. Mohsin : And the people of Nûh (Noah) aforetime, verily, they were more unjust and more rebellious and transgressing [in disobeying Allâh and His Messenger Nûh (Noah) A.S.]
Pickthal : And the folk of Noah aforetime, Lo! they were more unjust and more rebellious;
Yusuf Ali : And before them, the people of Noah, for that they were (all) most unjust and most insolent transgressors.


Verse:053
Dr. Mohsin : And He destroyed the overthrown cities [of Sodom to which Prophet Lut (Lot) was sent].
Pickthal : And Al-Mu'tafikah He destroyed
Yusuf Ali : And He destroyed the Overthrown Cities (of Sodom and Gomorrah),


Verse:054
Dr. Mohsin : So there covered them that which did cover (i.e. torment with stones)
Pickthal : So that there covered them that which did cover.
Yusuf Ali : So that (ruins unknown) have covered them up.


Verse:055
Dr. Mohsin : Then which of the Graces of your Lord (O man!) will you doubt
Pickthal : Concerning which then, of the bounties of thy Lord, canst thou dispute?
Yusuf Ali : Then which of the gifts of thy Lord, (O man), wilt thou dispute about?


Verse:056
Dr. Mohsin : This (Muhammad SAW) is a warner (Messenger) of the (series of) warners (Messengers) of old[]
Pickthal : This is a warner of the warners of old.
Yusuf Ali : This is a Warner of the (series of) Warners of old!


Verse:057
Dr. Mohsin : The Day of Resurrection draws near,
Pickthal : The threatened Hour is nigh.
Yusuf Ali : The (Judgment) ever approaching draws nigh:


Verse:058
Dr. Mohsin : None besides Allâh can avert it, (or advance it, or delay it).
Pickthal : None beside Allah can disclose it.
Yusuf Ali : No (soul) but Allah can lay it bare.


Verse:059
Dr. Mohsin : Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur'ân)?
Pickthal : Marvel ye then at this statement,
Yusuf Ali : Do ye then wonder at this recital?


Verse:060
Dr. Mohsin : And you laugh at it and weep not,
Pickthal : And laugh and not weep,
Yusuf Ali : And will ye laugh and not weep―


Verse:061
Dr. Mohsin : Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing etc.).
Pickthal : While ye amuse yourselves?
Yusuf Ali : Wasting your time in vanities?


Verse:062
Dr. Mohsin : So fall you down in prostration to Allâh, and worship Him (Alone).
Pickthal : Rather prostrate yourselves before Allah and serve Him.
Yusuf Ali : But fall ye down in prostration to Allah and adore (Him)!
