Verse:001Dr. Mohsin : By those (angels) ranged in ranks (or rows).
Pickthal : By those who set the ranks in battle order
Yusuf Ali : By those who range themselves in ranks.
Verse:002Dr. Mohsin : By those (angels) who drive the clouds in a good way.
Pickthal : And those who drive away (the wicked) with reproof
Yusuf Ali : And so are strong in repelling (evil),
Verse:003Dr. Mohsin : By those (angels) who bring the Book and the Qur'ân from Allâh to mankind [Tafsir Ibn Kathîr].
Pickthal : And those who read (the Word) for a reminder,
Yusuf Ali : And thus proclaim the Message (of Allah)!
Verse:004Dr. Mohsin : Verily your Ilâh (God) is indeed One (i.e. Allâh);
Pickthal : Lo! thy Lord is surely One;
Yusuf Ali : Verily, verily, your Allah is One!―
Verse:005Dr. Mohsin : Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of every point of the sun's risings.
Pickthal : Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of the sun's risings.
Yusuf Ali : Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all between them and Lord of every point at the rising of the sun!
Verse:006Dr. Mohsin : Verily! We have adorned the near heaven with the stars (for beauty).[]
Pickthal : Lo! We have adorned the lowest heaven with an ornament, the planets;
Yusuf Ali : We have indeed decked the lower heaven with beauty (in) the stars―
Verse:007Dr. Mohsin : And to guard against every rebellious devil.
Pickthal : With security from every froward devil.
Yusuf Ali : (For beauty) and for guard against all obstinate rebellious evil spirits.
Verse:008Dr. Mohsin : They cannot listen to the higher group (angels) for they are pelted from every side.
Pickthal : They cannot listen to the Highest Chiefs for they are pelted from every side,
Yusuf Ali : (So) they should not strain their ears in the direction of the Exalted Assembly and they are cast away from every side.
Verse:009Dr. Mohsin : Outcast, and theirs is a constant (or painful) torment.
Pickthal : Outcast, and theirs is a perpetual torment;
Yusuf Ali : Repulsed, for they are under a perpetual penalty.
Verse:010Dr. Mohsin : Except such as snatch away something by stealing and they are pursued by a flaming fire of piercing brightness.
Pickthal : Save him who snatcheth a fragment, and there pursueth him a piercing flame.
Yusuf Ali : Except such as snatch away something by stealth, and they are pursued by a flaming Fire, of piercing brightness.
Verse:011Dr. Mohsin : Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad SAW): "Are they stronger as creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.
Pickthal : Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others) whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
Yusuf Ali : Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other) beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
Verse:012Dr. Mohsin : Nay, you (O Muhammad SAW) wondered (at their insolence) while they mock (at you and at the Qur'ân).
Pickthal : Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock
Yusuf Ali : Truly dost thou marvel while they ridicule
Verse:013Dr. Mohsin : And when they are reminded, they pay no attention.
Pickthal : And heed not when they are reminded,
Yusuf Ali : And, when they are admonished, pay no heed―
Verse:014Dr. Mohsin : And when they see an Ayâh (a sign, a proof, or an evidence) from Allâh, they mock at it.
Pickthal : And seek to scoff when they behold a portent.
Yusuf Ali : And, when they see a Sign, turn it to mockery,
Verse:015Dr. Mohsin : And they say: "This is nothing but evident magic!
Pickthal : And they say: Lo! this is mere magic;
Yusuf Ali : And say "This is nothing but evident sorcery!
Verse:016Dr. Mohsin : "When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we (then) verily be resurrected?
Pickthal : When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised (again)?
Yusuf Ali : "What! when we die, and become dust and bones, shall we (then) be raised up (again)?
Verse:017Dr. Mohsin : "And also our fathers of old?"
Pickthal : And our forefathers?
Yusuf Ali : "And also our fathers of old?"
Verse:018Dr. Mohsin : Say (O Muhammad SAW): "Yes, and you shall then be humiliated."
Pickthal : Say (O Muhammad): Yea, in truth; and ye will be brought low.
Yusuf Ali : Say thou: "Yea, and ye shall then be humiliated (on account of your evil)."
Verse:019Dr. Mohsin : It will be a single Zajrah [shout (i.e. the second blowing of the Trumpet)], and behold, they will be staring!
Pickthal : There is but one Shout, and lo! they behold,
Yusuf Ali : Then it will be a single (compelling) cry; and behold, they will begin to see!
Verse:020Dr. Mohsin : They will say: "Woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense!"
Pickthal : And say: Ah, woe for us! This is the Day of Judgment.
Yusuf Ali : They will say "Ah! woe to us! This is the Day of Judgement!"
Verse:021Dr. Mohsin : (It will be said): "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."
Pickthal : This is the Day of Separation, which ye used to deny.
Yusuf Ali : (A voice will say) "This is the Day of Sorting Out, whose truth ye (once) denied!"
Verse:022Dr. Mohsin : It will be said to the angels): "Assemble those who did wrong, together with their companions (from the devils) and what they used to worship
Pickthal : (And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship
Yusuf Ali : -Bring ye up" it shall be said "The wrongdoers and their wives, and the things they worshipped―
Verse:023Dr. Mohsin : "Instead of Allâh, and lead them on to the way of flaming Fire (Hell);
Pickthal : Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell;
Yusuf Ali : "Besides Allah, and lead them to the Way to the (Fierce) Fire!
Verse:024Dr. Mohsin : "But stop them, verily they are to be questioned.
Pickthal : And stop them, for they must be questioned.
Yusuf Ali : "But stop them, for they must be asked:
Verse:025Dr. Mohsin : "What is the matter with you? Why do you not help one another (as you used to do in the world)?"
Pickthal : What aileth you that ye help not one another?
Yusuf Ali : " `What is the matter with you that ye help not each other?' "
Verse:026Dr. Mohsin : Nay, but that Day they shall surrender,
Pickthal : Nay, but this Day they make full submission.
Yusuf Ali : Nay, but that day they shall submit (to Judgment);
Verse:027Dr. Mohsin : And they will turn to one another and question one another.
Pickthal : And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Yusuf Ali : And they will turn to one another, and question one another.
Verse:028Dr. Mohsin : They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, enjoin on us polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and from every good deed]."
Pickthal : They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the truth).
Yusuf Ali : They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power and authority)!"
Verse:029Dr. Mohsin : They will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were not believers.
Pickthal : They answer: Nay, but ye (yourselves) were not believers.
Yusuf Ali : They will reply: "Nay, ye yourselves had no Faith!
Verse:030Dr. Mohsin : "And we had no authority over you. Nay! But you were Taghun (transgressing) people (polytheists, and disbelievers).
Pickthal : We had no power over you, but ye were wayward folk.
Yusuf Ali : "Nor had we any authority over you. Nay, it was ye who were a people in obstinate rebellion!
Verse:031Dr. Mohsin : "So now the Word of our Lord has been justified against us, that we shall certainly (have to) taste (the torment).
Pickthal : Now the Word of our Lord hath been fulfilled concerning us. Lo! we are about to taste (the doom).
Yusuf Ali : "So now has been proved true, against us, the Word of our Lord that we shall indeed (have to) taste (the punishment of our sins):
Verse:032Dr. Mohsin : "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray."
Pickthal : Thus we misled you. Lo! we were (ourselves) astray.
Yusuf Ali : "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray."
Verse:033Dr. Mohsin : Then verily, that Day, they will (all) share in the torment.
Pickthal : Then lo! this Day they (both) are sharers in the doom.
Yusuf Ali : Truly, that Day, they will (all) share in the Penalty.
Verse:034Dr. Mohsin : Certainly, that is how We deal with Al¬Mujrimûn (polytheists, sinners, disbelivers, criminals, the disobedient to Allâh).
Pickthal : Lo! thus deal We with the guilty.
Yusuf Ali : Verily that is how We shall deal with Sinners.
Verse:035Dr. Mohsin : Truly, when it was said to them: Lâ ilâha illallâh "(none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh)," they puffed themselves up with pride[] (i.e. denied it).
Pickthal : For when it was said unto them, There is no god save Allah, they were scornful
Yusuf Ali : For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff themselves up with Pride.
Verse:036Dr. Mohsin : And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our âlihah (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?
Pickthal : And said: Shall we forsake our gods for a mad poet?
Yusuf Ali : And say: "What! shall we give up our gods for the sake of a Poet possessed?"
Verse:037Dr. Mohsin : Nay! he (Muhammad SAW) has come with the truth (i.e. Allâh's religion - Islâmic Monotheism and this Qur'ân) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who brought Allâh's religion - Islâmic Monotheism).
Pickthal : Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
Yusuf Ali : Nay! He has come with the (very) Truth and he confirms (the Message of) the messengers (before Him).
Verse:038Dr. Mohsin : Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment;
Pickthal : Lo! (now) verily ye taste the painful doom -
Yusuf Ali : Ye shall indeed taste of the Grievous Penalty―
Verse:039Dr. Mohsin : And you will be requited nothing except for what you used to do (evil deeds, sins, and Allâh's disobedience which you used to do in this world);
Pickthal : Ye are requited naught save what ye did -
Yusuf Ali : But it will be no more than the retribution of (the Evil) that ye have wrought
Verse:040Dr. Mohsin : Save the chosen slaves of Allâh (i.e. the true believers of Islâmic Monotheism).
Pickthal : Save single-minded slaves of Allah;
Yusuf Ali : But the sincere (and devoted) servants of Allah―
Verse:041Dr. Mohsin : For them there will be a known provision (in Paradise),
Pickthal : For them there is a known provision,
Yusuf Ali : For them is a Sustenance Determined
Verse:042Dr. Mohsin : Fruits; and they shall be honoured,
Pickthal : Fruits. And they will be honoured
Yusuf Ali : Fruits (Delights), and they (shall enjoy) honour and dignity.
Verse:043Dr. Mohsin : In the Gardens of delight (Paradise),
Pickthal : In the Gardens of delight,
Yusuf Ali : In Gardens of Felicity.
Verse:044Dr. Mohsin : Facing one another on thrones,
Pickthal : On couches facing one another;
Yusuf Ali : Facing each other on Thrones (of dignity):
Verse:045Dr. Mohsin : Round them will be passed a cup of pure wine,—
Pickthal : A cup from a gushing spring is brought round for them,
Yusuf Ali : Round will be passed to them a Cup from a clear-flowing fountain―
Verse:046Dr. Mohsin : White, delicious to the drinkers,
Pickthal : White, delicious to the drinkers,
Yusuf Ali : Crystal-white of a taste delicious to those who drink (thereof),
Verse:047Dr. Mohsin : Neither will they have Ghoul (any kind of hurt, abdominal pain, headache, a sin) from that, nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
Pickthal : Wherein there is no headache nor are they made mad thereby.
Yusuf Ali : Free from headiness; nor will they suffer intoxication therefrom.
Verse:048Dr. Mohsin : And beside them will be Qâsirât-at-Tarf [chaste females (wives), restraining their glances (desiring none except their husbands)], with wide and beautiful eyes.[]
Pickthal : And with them are those of modest gaze, with lovely eyes,
Yusuf Ali : And beside them will be chaste women; restraining their glances, with big eyes (of wonder and beauty).
Verse:049Dr. Mohsin : (Delicate and pure) as if they were (hidden) eggs (well) preserved.
Pickthal : (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich).
Yusuf Ali : As if they were (delicate) eggs closely guarded.
Verse:050Dr. Mohsin : Then they will turn to one another, mutually questioning.
Pickthal : And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning.
Yusuf Ali : Then they will turn to one another and question one another.
Verse:051Dr. Mohsin : A speaker of them will say: "Verily, I had a companion (in the world),
Pickthal : A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade
Yusuf Ali : One of them will start the talk and say: "I had an intimate companion (on the earth)
Verse:052Dr. Mohsin : Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death).
Pickthal : Who used to say: Art thou in truth of those who put faith (in his words)?
Yusuf Ali : "Who used to say `What! art thou amongst those who bear witness to the truth (of the Message)?
Verse:053Dr. Mohsin : "(That) when we die and become dust and bones, shall we indeed (be raised up) to receive reward or punishment (according to our deeds)?"
Pickthal : Can we, when we are dead and have become mere dust and bones - can we (then) verily be brought to book?
Yusuf Ali : " `When we die and become dust and bones shall we indeed receive rewards and punishments?' "
Verse:054Dr. Mohsin : (The speaker) said: "Will you look down?"
Pickthal : He saith: Will ye look?
Yusuf Ali : (A voice) said: "Would ye like to look down?"
Verse:055Dr. Mohsin : So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
Pickthal : Then looketh he and seeth him in the depth of hell.
Yusuf Ali : He looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire.
Verse:056Dr. Mohsin : He said: "By Allâh! You have nearly ruined me.
Pickthal : He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
Yusuf Ali : He said: "By Allah! Thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
Verse:057Dr. Mohsin : "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought forth (to Hell)."
Pickthal : And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom).
Yusuf Ali : "Had it not been for the Grace of my Lord, I should certainly have been among those brought (there)!
Verse:058Dr. Mohsin : (The dwellers of Paradise will say): "Are we then not to die (any more)?
Pickthal : Are we then not to die
Yusuf Ali : "Is it (the case) that we shall not die
Verse:059Dr. Mohsin : "Except our first death, and we shall not be punished? (after we have entered Paradise)."
Pickthal : Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished?
Yusuf Ali : "Except our first death, and that we shall not be punished?"
Verse:060Dr. Mohsin : Truly, this is the supreme success!
Pickthal : Lo! this is the supreme triumph.
Yusuf Ali : Verily this is the supreme achievement!
Verse:061Dr. Mohsin : For the like of this let the workers work.
Pickthal : For the like of this, then, let the workers work.
Yusuf Ali : For the like of this let all strive, who wish to strive.
Verse:062Dr. Mohsin : Is that (Paradise) better entertainment or the tree of Zaqqûm (a horrible tree in Hell)?
Pickthal : Is this better as a welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum?
Yusuf Ali : Is that the better entertainment or the Tree of Zaqqum?
Verse:063Dr. Mohsin : Truly We have made it (as) a trail for the Zâlimûn (polytheists, disbelievers, wrong-doers).
Pickthal : Lo! We have appointed it a torment for wrong-doers.
Yusuf Ali : For We have truly made it (as) a trial for the wrongdoers.
Verse:064Dr. Mohsin : Verily, it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell-fire,
Pickthal : Lo! it is a tree that springeth in the heart of hell.
Yusuf Ali : For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hell Fire:
Verse:065Dr. Mohsin : The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayâtin (devils);
Pickthal : Its crop is as it were the heads of devils
Yusuf Ali : The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of devils:
Verse:066Dr. Mohsin : Truly, they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
Pickthal : And lo! they verily must eat thereof, and fill (their) bellies therewith.
Yusuf Ali : Truly they will eat thereof and fill their bellies therewith.
Verse:067Dr. Mohsin : Then on the top of that they will be given boiling water to drink so that it becomes a mixture (of boiling water and Zaqqûm in their bellies).
Pickthal : And afterward, lo! thereupon they have a drink of boiling water
Yusuf Ali : Then on top of that they will be given a mixture made of boiling water.
Verse:068Dr. Mohsin : Then thereafter, verily, their return is to the flaming fire of Hell.
Pickthal : And afterward, lo! their return is surely unto hell.
Yusuf Ali : Then shall their return be to the (Blazing) Fire.
Verse:069Dr. Mohsin : Verily, they found their fathers on the wrong path;
Pickthal : They indeed found their fathers astray,
Yusuf Ali : Truly they found their fathers on the wrong Path;
Verse:070Dr. Mohsin : So they (too) hastend in their footsteps!
Pickthal : But they make haste (to follow) in their footsteps.
Yusuf Ali : So they (too) were rushed down on their footsteps!
Verse:071Dr. Mohsin : And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them;
Pickthal : And verily most of the men of old went astray before them,
Yusuf Ali : And truly before them, many of the ancients went astray―
Verse:072Dr. Mohsin : And indeed We sent among them warners (Messengers);
Pickthal : And verily We sent among them warners.
Yusuf Ali : But We sent aforetime, among them, (messengers) to admonish them―
Verse:073Dr. Mohsin : Then see what was the end of those who were warned (but heeded not).
Pickthal : Then see the nature of the consequence for those warned,
Yusuf Ali : Then see what was the end of those who were admonished (but heeded not)―
Verse:074Dr. Mohsin : Except the chosen slaves of Allâh (faithful, obedient, and true believers of Islâmic Monotheism).
Pickthal : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Yusuf Ali : Except the sincere (and devoted) servants of Allah.
Verse:075Dr. Mohsin : And indeed Nûh (Noah) invoked Us, and We are the Best of those who answer (the request).
Pickthal : And Noah verily prayed unto Us, and gracious was the Hearer of his prayer
Yusuf Ali : (In the days of old), Noah cried to Us, and We are the Best to hear prayer.
Verse:076Dr. Mohsin : And We rescued him and his family from the great distress (i.e. drowning),
Pickthal : And We saved him and his household from the great distress,
Yusuf Ali : And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity.
Verse:077Dr. Mohsin : And, his progeny, them We made the survivors (i.e. Shem, Ham and Japheth).
Pickthal : And made his seed the survivors,
Yusuf Ali : And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);
Verse:078Dr. Mohsin : And left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations:
Pickthal : And left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Yusuf Ali : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:
Verse:079Dr. Mohsin : "Salâm (peace) be upon Nûh (Noah) (from Us) among the ‘Âlamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists)!"
Pickthal : Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!
Yusuf Ali : "Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!"
Verse:080Dr. Mohsin : Verily, thus We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).
Pickthal : Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Yusuf Ali : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
Verse:081Dr. Mohsin : Verily, he [Nûh (Noah)] was one of Our believing slaves.
Pickthal : Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Yusuf Ali : For he was one of Our believing Servants.
Verse:082Dr. Mohsin : Then We drowned the others (disbelievers and polytheists).
Pickthal : Then We did drown the others.
Yusuf Ali : Then the rest We overwhelmed in the Flood.
Verse:083Dr. Mohsin : And, verily, among those who followed his [Nûh's (Noah)] way (Islâmic Monotheism) was Ibrâhim (Abraham).
Pickthal : And lo! of his persuasion verily was Abraham
Yusuf Ali : Verily among those who followed his Way was Abraham.
Verse:084Dr. Mohsin : When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allâh Alone - and none else, worshipping none but Allâh Alone true Islâmic Monotheism, pure from the filth of polytheism].
Pickthal : When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;
Yusuf Ali : Behold, He approached his Lord with a sound heart.
Verse:085Dr. Mohsin : When he said to his father and to his people: "What is it that which you worship?
Pickthal : When he said unto his father and his folk: What is it that ye worship?
Yusuf Ali : Behold, he said to his father and to his people "What is that which ye worship?
Verse:086Dr. Mohsin : "Is it a falsehood âlihah (gods) other than Allâh that you desire?
Pickthal : Is it a falsehood - gods beside Allah - that ye desire?
Yusuf Ali : "Is it a Falsehood― gods other than Allah that ye desire?
Verse:087Dr. Mohsin : "Then what think you about the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exists)?"
Pickthal : What then is your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?
Yusuf Ali : "Then what is your idea about the Lord of the Worlds?"
Verse:088Dr. Mohsin : Then he cast a glance at the stars,
Pickthal : And he glanced a glance at the stars
Yusuf Ali : Then did he cast a glance at the stars.
Verse:089Dr. Mohsin : And he said: "Verily, I am sick (with plague). [He did this trick to remain in their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan feast]."
Pickthal : Then said: Lo! I feel sick!
Yusuf Ali : And he said "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"
Verse:090Dr. Mohsin : So they turned away from him, and departed (for fear of the disease).
Pickthal : And they turned their backs and went away from him.
Yusuf Ali : So they turned away from him, and departed.
Verse:091Dr. Mohsin : Then he turned to their âlihah (gods) and said: "Will you not eat (of the offering before you)?
Pickthal : Then turned he to their gods and said: Will ye not eat?
Yusuf Ali : Then did he turn to their gods and said "Will ye not eat (of the offerings before you)?...
Verse:092Dr. Mohsin : "What is the matter with you that you speak not?"
Pickthal : What aileth you that ye speak not?
Yusuf Ali : "What is the matter with you that ye speak not (intelligently)?"
Verse:093Dr. Mohsin : Then he turned upon them, striking (them) with (his) right hand.
Pickthal : Then he attacked them, striking with his right hand.
Yusuf Ali : Then did he turn upon them, striking (them) with the right hand.
Verse:094Dr. Mohsin : Then they (the worshippers of idols) came, towards him, hastening.
Pickthal : And (his people) came toward him, hastening.
Yusuf Ali : Then came (the worshippers) with hurried steps, and faced (him).
Verse:095Dr. Mohsin : He said: "Worship you that which you (yourselves) carve?
Pickthal : He said: Worship ye that which ye yourselves do carve
Yusuf Ali : He said: "Worship ye that which ye have (yourselves) carved?
Verse:096Dr. Mohsin : "While Allâh has created you and what you make!"
Pickthal : When Allah hath created you and what ye make?
Yusuf Ali : "But Allah has created you and your handiwork!"
Verse:097Dr. Mohsin : They said: "Build for him a building (it is said that the building was like a furnace) and throw him into the blazing fire!"
Pickthal : They said: Build for him a building and fling him in the red-hotfire.
Yusuf Ali : They said: "Build him a furnace, and throw him into the Blazing Fire!"
Verse:098Dr. Mohsin : So they plotted a plot against him, but We made them the lowest.
Pickthal : And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.
Yusuf Ali : (This failing), they then plotted against him, but We made them the ones most humiliated!
Verse:099Dr. Mohsin : And he said (after his rescue from the fire): "Verily, I am going to my Lord. He will guide me!"
Pickthal : And he said: Lo! I am going unto my Lord Who will guide me.
Yusuf Ali : He said: "I will go to my Lord! He will surely guide me!
Verse:100Dr. Mohsin : "My Lord! Grant me (offspring) from the righteous."
Pickthal : My Lord! Vouchsafe me of the righteous.
Yusuf Ali : "O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!"
Verse:101Dr. Mohsin : So We gave him the glad tidings of a forbearing boy.
Pickthal : So We gave him tidings of a gentle son.
Yusuf Ali : So We gave him the good news of a boy ready to suffer and forbear.
Verse:102Dr. Mohsin : And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to Allâh), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are commanded, Inshâ' Allâh (if Allâh will), you shall find me of As-Sâbirun (the patient)."
Pickthal : And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
Yusuf Ali : Then when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! do as thou art commanded: thou will find me if Allah so wills one practicing Patience and Constancy!"
Verse:103Dr. Mohsin : Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allâh), and he had laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for slaughtering);
Pickthal : Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon his face,
Yusuf Ali : So when they had both submitted (to Allah), and He had laid Him prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice)
Verse:104Dr. Mohsin : And We called out to him: "O Abraham!
Pickthal : We called unto him: O Abraham!
Yusuf Ali : We called out to him "O Abraham!
Verse:105Dr. Mohsin : You have fulfilled the dream!" Verily! thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).
Pickthal : Thou hast already fulfilled the vision. Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Yusuf Ali : "Thou hast already fulfilled the dream!"― thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
Verse:106Dr. Mohsin : Verily, that indeed was a manifest trial.
Pickthal : Lo! that verily was a clear test.
Yusuf Ali : For this was obviously a trial―
Verse:107Dr. Mohsin : And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice (i.e. کبش - a ram);
Pickthal : Then We ransomed him with a tremendous victim.
Yusuf Ali : And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice:
Verse:108Dr. Mohsin : And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations.
Pickthal : And We left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Yusuf Ali : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
Verse:109Dr. Mohsin : Salâmun (peace) be upon Ibrâhim (Abraham)!"
Pickthal : Peace be unto Abraham!
Yusuf Ali : "Peace and salutation to Abraham!"
Verse:110Dr. Mohsin : Thus indeed do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).
Pickthal : Thus do We reward the good.
Yusuf Ali : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
Verse:111Dr. Mohsin : Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves.
Pickthal : Lo! he is one of Our believing slaves.
Yusuf Ali : For he was one of Our believing Servants.
Verse:112Dr. Mohsin : And We gave him the glad tidings of Ishâq (Isaac) a Prophet from the righteous.
Pickthal : And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac, a prophet of the righteous.
Yusuf Ali : And We gave him the good news of Isaac― a prophet― one of the Righteous.
Verse:113Dr. Mohsin : We blessed him and Ishâq (Isaac), and of their progeny are (some) that do right, and some that plainly wrong themselves.
Pickthal : And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some who plainly wrong themselves.
Yusuf Ali : We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and (some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
Verse:114Dr. Mohsin : And, indeed We gave Our Grace to Mûsa (Moses) and Hârûn (Aaron).
Pickthal : And We verily gave grace unto Moses and Aaron,
Yusuf Ali : Again (of old) We bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron.
Verse:115Dr. Mohsin : And We saved them and their people from the great distress;
Pickthal : And saved them and their people from the great distress,
Yusuf Ali : And We delivered them and their people from (their) Great Calamity;
Verse:116Dr. Mohsin : And helped them, so that they became the victors;
Pickthal : And helped them so that they became the victors.
Yusuf Ali : And We helped them, so they overcame (their troubles);
Verse:117Dr. Mohsin : And We gave them the clear Scripture;
Pickthal : And We gave them the clear Scripture
Yusuf Ali : And We gave them the Book which helps to make things clear;
Verse:118Dr. Mohsin : And guided them to the Right Path;
Pickthal : And showed them the right path.
Yusuf Ali : And We guided them to the Straight Way.
Verse:119Dr. Mohsin : And We left for them (a goodly remembrance) among the generations;
Pickthal : And We left for them among the later folk (the salutation):
Yusuf Ali : And We left (this blessing) for them among generations (to come) in later times:
Verse:120Dr. Mohsin : Salâm (peace) be upon Mûsa (Moses) and Hârûn (Aaron)!"
Pickthal : Peace be unto Moses and Aaron!
Yusuf Ali : "Peace and salutation to Moses and Aaron!"
Verse:121Dr. Mohsin : Verily, thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers - see V.2:112).
Pickthal : Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Yusuf Ali : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
Verse:122Dr. Mohsin : Verily! they were two of Our believing slaves.
Pickthal : Lo! they are two of Our believing slaves.
Yusuf Ali : For they were two of Our believing Servants.
Verse:123Dr. Mohsin : And verily, Iliyâs (Elias) was one of the Messengers
Pickthal : And lo! Elias was of those sent (to warn),
Yusuf Ali : So also was Elias among those sent (by us).
Verse:124Dr. Mohsin : When he said to his people: "Will you not fear Allâh?
Pickthal : When he said unto his folk: Will ye not ward off (evil)?
Yusuf Ali : Behold he said to his people "Will ye not fear (Allah)?
Verse:125Dr. Mohsin : "Will you call upon Ba'l (a well- known idol of his nation whom they used to worship) and forsake the Best of creators,
Pickthal : Will ye cry unto Baal and forsake the best of creators,
Yusuf Ali : "Will ye call upon Baal and forsake the Best of Creators―
Verse:126Dr. Mohsin : "Allâh, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?"
Pickthal : Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?
Yusuf Ali : "Allah, your Lord and Cherisher and the Lord and Cherisher of your fathers of old?"
Verse:127Dr. Mohsin : But they denied him [Iliyâs (Elias)], so they will certainly be brought forth (to the punishment),
Pickthal : But they denied him, so they surely will be haled forth (to the doom)
Yusuf Ali : But they rejected him and they will certainly be called up (for punishment)―
Verse:128Dr. Mohsin : Except the chosen slaves of Allâh.
Pickthal : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Yusuf Ali : Except the sincere and devoted Servants of Allah (among them).
Verse:129Dr. Mohsin : And We left for him (a goodly remembrance) among the later generations (to come) in later times;
Pickthal : And we left for him among the later folk (the salutation):
Yusuf Ali : And We left (this blessing) for him among generations (to come) in later times:
Verse:130Dr. Mohsin : Salâm (peace) be upon Ilyâsîn (Elias)!"
Pickthal : Peace be unto Elias!
Yusuf Ali : "Peace and salutation to such as Elias!"
Verse:131Dr. Mohsin : Verily, thus do We reward the Muhsinûn (good-doers, who perform good deeds totally for Allâh's sake only - see V.2:112)
Pickthal : Lo! thus do We reward the good.
Yusuf Ali : Thus indeed do We reward those who do right.
Verse:132Dr. Mohsin : Verily, he was one of Our believing slaves.
Pickthal : Lo! he is one of our believing slaves.
Yusuf Ali : For He was one of Our believing Servants.
Verse:133Dr. Mohsin : And verily, Lut (Lot) was one of the Messengers
Pickthal : And lo! Lot verily was of those sent (to warn).
Yusuf Ali : So also was Lut among those sent (by us).
Verse:134Dr. Mohsin : When We saved him and his family, all,
Pickthal : When We saved him and his household, every one,
Yusuf Ali : Behold, We delivered him and his adherents, all
Verse:135Dr. Mohsin : Except an old woman (his wife) who was among those who remained behind.
Pickthal : Save an old woman among those who stayed behind;
Yusuf Ali : Except an old woman who was among those who lagged behind:
Verse:136Dr. Mohsin : Then We destroyed the rest [i.e. the town of Sodom at the place of the Dead Sea now in Palestine].
Pickthal : Then We destroyed the others.
Yusuf Ali : Then We destroyed the rest.
Verse:137Dr. Mohsin : Verily, you pass by them in the morning.
Pickthal : And lo! ye verily pass by (the ruin of) them in the morning
Yusuf Ali : Verily, ye pass by their (sites), by day―
Verse:138Dr. Mohsin : And at night; will you not then reflect?
Pickthal : And at night-time; have ye then no sense?
Yusuf Ali : And by night: will ye not understand?
Verse:139Dr. Mohsin : And, verily, Yûnus (Jonah) was one of the Messengers
Pickthal : And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn)
Yusuf Ali : So also was Jonah among those sent (by us).
Verse:140Dr. Mohsin : When he ran to the laden ship,
Pickthal : When he fled unto the laden ship,
Yusuf Ali : When he ran away (like slave from captivity) to the ship (fully) laden
Verse:141Dr. Mohsin : Then he (agreed to) cast lots, and he was among the losers,
Pickthal : And then drew lots and was of those rejected;
Yusuf Ali : He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned:
Verse:142Dr. Mohsin : Then a (big) fish swallowed as and he had done an act worthy of blame.
Pickthal : And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy;
Yusuf Ali : Then the big Fish did swallow him, and he had done acts worthy of blame.
Verse:143Dr. Mohsin : Had he not been of them who glorify Allâh,
Pickthal : And had he not been one of those who glorify (Allah)
Yusuf Ali : Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah,
Verse:144Dr. Mohsin : He would have indeed remained inside its belly (the fish) till the Day of Resurrection.
Pickthal : He would have tarried in its belly till the day when they are raised;
Yusuf Ali : He would certainly have remained inside the Fish till the Day of Resurrection.
Verse:145Dr. Mohsin : But We cast him forth on the naked shore while he was sick,
Pickthal : Then We cast him on a desert shore while he was sick;
Yusuf Ali : But We cast him forth, on the naked shore in a state of sickness
Verse:146Dr. Mohsin : And We caused a plant of gourd to grow over him.
Pickthal : And We caused a tree of gourd to grow above him;
Yusuf Ali : And We caused to grow, over him a spreading plant of the Gourd kind
Verse:147Dr. Mohsin : And We sent him to a hundred thousand (people) or even more.
Pickthal : And We sent him to a hundred thousand (folk) or more
Yusuf Ali : And We sent him (on a mission) to a hundred thousand (men) or more.
Verse:148Dr. Mohsin : And they believed; so We gave them enjoyment for a while.
Pickthal : And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while.
Yusuf Ali : And they believed; so We permitted them to enjoy (their life) for a while.
Verse:149Dr. Mohsin : Now ask them (O Muhammad SAW): "Are there (only) daughters for your Lord and sons for them?"
Pickthal : Now ask them (O Muhammad): Hath thy Lord daughters whereas they have sons?
Yusuf Ali : Now ask them their opinion: is it that thy Lord has (only) daughters, and they have sons?
Verse:150Dr. Mohsin : Or did We create the angels female while they were witnesses?
Pickthal : Or created We the angels females while they were present?
Yusuf Ali : Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)?
Verse:151Dr. Mohsin : Verily, it is of their falsehood that they (Quraish pagans) say:
Pickthal : Lo! it is of their falsehood that they say:
Yusuf Ali : Is it not that they say from their own invention
Verse:152Dr. Mohsin : "Allâh has begotten (off spring the angels being the daughters of Allâh)?" And, verily, they are liars!
Pickthal : Allah hath begotten. Allah! verily they tell a lie.
Yusuf Ali : "Allah has begotten children"? But they are liars!
Verse:153Dr. Mohsin : Has He (then) chosen daughters rather than sons?
Pickthal : (And again of their falsehood): He hath preferred daughters to sons.
Yusuf Ali : Did He (then) choose daughters rather than sons?
Verse:154Dr. Mohsin : What is the matter with you? How do you decide?
Pickthal : What aileth you? How judge ye?
Yusuf Ali : What is the matter with you? How judge ye?
Verse:155Dr. Mohsin : Will you not then remember?
Pickthal : Will ye not then reflect?
Yusuf Ali : Will ye not then receive admonition?
Verse:156Dr. Mohsin : Or is there for you a plain authority?
Pickthal : Or have ye a clear warrant?
Yusuf Ali : Or have ye an authority manifest?
Verse:157Dr. Mohsin : Then bring your Book if you are truthful!
Pickthal : Then produce your writ, if ye are truthful.
Yusuf Ali : Then bring ye your Book (of authority) if ye be truthful!
Verse:158Dr. Mohsin : And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinn, but the jinn know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for account).
Pickthal : And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him).
Yusuf Ali : And they have invented a blood-relationship between Him and the Jinns: but the Jinns know (quite well) that they have indeed to appear (before His judgment-seat)!
Verse:159Dr. Mohsin : Glorified is Allâh! (He is Free) from what they attribute unto Him!
Pickthal : Glorified be Allah from that which they attribute (unto Him),
Yusuf Ali : Glory to Allah! (He is free) from the things they ascribe (to Him)!
Verse:160Dr. Mohsin : Except the slaves of Allâh, whom He choses (for His Mercy i.e. true believers of Islâmic Monotheism who do not attribute false things unto Allâh).
Pickthal : Save single-minded slaves of Allah.
Yusuf Ali : Not (so do) the servants of Allah, sincere and devoted.
Verse:161Dr. Mohsin : So, verily you (pagans) and those whom you worship (idols)
Pickthal : Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship,
Yusuf Ali : For, verily, neither ye nor those ye worship―
Verse:162Dr. Mohsin : Cannot lead astray [turn away from Him (Allâh) anyone of the believers],
Pickthal : Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him.
Yusuf Ali : Can lead (any) into temptation concerning Allah,
Verse:163Dr. Mohsin : Except those who are predestined to burn in Hell!
Pickthal : Save him who is to burn in hell.
Yusuf Ali : Except such as are (themselves) going to the blazing Fire!
Verse:164Dr. Mohsin : And there is not one of us (angels) but has his known place (or position);
Pickthal : There is not one of us but hath his known position.
Yusuf Ali : (Those ranged in ranks say): "Not one of us but has a place appointed
Verse:165Dr. Mohsin : Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows (for the prayers as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers);
Pickthal : Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks,
Yusuf Ali : "And we are verily ranged in ranks (for service):
Verse:166Dr. Mohsin : And verily, we (angels), indeed are those who glorify (Allâh's Praises i.e. perform prayers).
Pickthal : Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise
Yusuf Ali : "And we are verily those who declare (Allah's) glory!"
Verse:167Dr. Mohsin : And indeed they (Arab pagans) used to say;
Pickthal : And indeed they used to say:
Yusuf Ali : And there were those who said
Verse:168Dr. Mohsin : "If we had a reminder as had the men of old (before the coming of Prophet Muhammad SAW as a Messenger of Allâh).
Pickthal : If we had but a reminder from the men of old
Yusuf Ali : "If only we had had before us a Message from those of old.
Verse:169Dr. Mohsin : "We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allâh (true believers of Islâmic Monotheism)!"
Pickthal : We would be single-minded slaves of Allah.
Yusuf Ali : "We should certainly have been servants of Allah, sincere (and devoted)!"
Verse:170Dr. Mohsin : But (now that the Qur'ân has come) they disbelieve therein (i.e. in the Qur'ân and in Prophet Muhammad SAW , and all that he brought, the Divine Revelation), so they will come to know!
Pickthal : Yet (now that it is come) they disbelieve therein; but they will come to know.
Yusuf Ali : But (now that the Qur'an has come) they reject it: but soon will they know!
Verse:171Dr. Mohsin : And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our slaves, the Messengers,
Pickthal : And verily Our word went forth of old unto Our bondmen sent (to warn)
Yusuf Ali : Already has Our Word been passed before (this) to Our Servants sent (by Us)
Verse:172Dr. Mohsin : That they verily would be made triumphant.
Pickthal : That they verily would be helped,
Yusuf Ali : That they would certainly be assisted
Verse:173Dr. Mohsin : And that Our hosts, they verily would be the victors.
Pickthal : And that Our host, they verily would be the victors.
Yusuf Ali : And that Our forces― they surely must conquer.
Verse:174Dr. Mohsin : So turn away (O Muhammad SAW) from them for a while,
Pickthal : So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) awhile,
Yusuf Ali : So turn thou away from them for a little while,
Verse:175Dr. Mohsin : And watch them and they shall see (the punishment)!
Pickthal : And watch, for they will (soon) see.
Yusuf Ali : And watch them (how they fare), and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
Verse:176Dr. Mohsin : Do they seek to hasten on Our Torment?
Pickthal : Would they hasten on Our doom?
Yusuf Ali : Do they wish (indeed) to hurry on Our Punishment?
Verse:177Dr. Mohsin : Then, when it descends into their courtyard (i.e. near to them), evil will be the morning for those who had been warned!
Pickthal : But when it cometh home to them, then it will be a hapless morn for those who have been warned.
Yusuf Ali : But when it descends into the open space before them, Evil will be the morning for those who were warned (and heeded not)!
Verse:178Dr. Mohsin : So turn (O Muhammad SAW) away from them for a while,
Pickthal : Withdraw from them awhile
Yusuf Ali : So turn thou away from them for a little while
Verse:179Dr. Mohsin : And watch and they shall see (the torment)!
Pickthal : And watch, for they will (soon) see.
Yusuf Ali : And watch (how they fare) and they soon shall see (how thou farest)!
Verse:180Dr. Mohsin : Glorified is your Lord, the Lord of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they attribute unto Him!
Pickthal : Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)
Yusuf Ali : Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free) from what they ascribe (to Him)!
Verse:181Dr. Mohsin : And peace be on the Messengers!
Pickthal : And peace be unto those sent (to warn).
Yusuf Ali : And Peace on the Messengers!
Verse:182Dr. Mohsin : And all the praises and thanks are to Allâh, Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists).
Pickthal : And praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds!
Yusuf Ali : And praise to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.
